093011br0124RSPRINGFIELD – State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D-Chicago Heights) released the following statement this afternoon after attending the bill signing of legislation enacting a Fiscal Year 2020 state budget and putting forth to voters the question of a progressive income tax:

“We have had a structural deficit in this state for a very, very long time. One of the first things I learned when I became Chair of the Senate Revenue Committee was just how old, outdated and antiquated our tax system is and how it isn’t working for the economy we actually have.

“You can’t expect results about the things you care about without proper investment on the front end. The rates package answers a call from the community to be transparent about changing our tax code. It lays out proposed rates in full view of every Illinois resident to see. This is the result of all of us working to do exactly what our constituencies asked us to do.

“Our problems are way too big to think small. But we have worked together in a way we haven’t seen in years. We are ready to meet the challenges that the future holds.”
