021413br0652rSPRINGFIELD - State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D- Chicago Heights), voted today to pass Senate Bill 10, also known as the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.

Hutchinson believes that all couples regardless of sexual orientation should be afforded the same opportunities and benefits under the law.

“This is a new day for Illinois and we should all be proud.  We are giving all couples regardless of sexual orientation the opportunity to marry the person they love,” Hutchinson said.

Nine states plus the District of Columbia already allow same-sex couples to marry.  Once the bill becomes law, Illinois can be added to that list of growing states that recognize the importance of marriage equality.

“Today the state of Illinois takes another historical step towards equality.  I am proud to live in a state that acknowledges the basic rights of all citizens,” said Hutchinson.

SB10 does not erode any existing constitutional or legal protections for religious institutions.
